Ted Lasso
Earlier this week, I discussed the series finale of Barry, a dark comedy. Tonight I got to finish the season (maybe series?) finale of Ted Lasso, a light comedy.
Ted Lasso is the story of a midwestern American football coach who gets hired to go coach a English football (soccer) club. Where as Barry is funny and dark and explores many ideas through that lens, Ted Lasso is bright, sunny, and explores many ideas through that lens. But just as Barry was an excellent show, Ted Lasso is also an excellent show.
Despite being a much more hopeful, uplifting show, it was not afraid to dive into series and deep issues through out. It covers racism, depression, anxiety, divorce, and countless other topics, while still remaining a hopeful and uplifting show. It shows people struggle and what it takes for them to overcome their struggles and attempt to strive. It doesn't push these dark topics to the side, but rather shows a way to help defeat them. All while also cramming in some amazing jokes and scenes. It was not perfect; sometimes it even gets a bit corny! But it was an excellent watch and another that my wife and I eagerly tuned into each week. While I wouldn't say its a kid's show it is something I will be excited to watch with my kids as they grow into teenagers and young adults.
If Barry being a dark comedy doesn't sound like something your speed, check out Ted Lasso! It also tends to be about 30-40 minutes with a few outlier episodes and has 34 episodes total so it also isn't a huge commitment timewise.
