Barry
Barry is a show I began watching a few years ago after hearing good things about its first season. I quickly became hooked and devoured seasons 2, 3, and now 4 as they were airing.
Barry is a dark comedy. It has its funny moments and it has its dark moments that are some of the darkest I have seen. I can think of one scene from Season 3 that might be the most horrifying scene I have ever experienced in movie or TV.
It explores the ideas of truth, of redemption, of what we want to be. It explores them through the lenses of following Barry, a hitman who wants so badly to just be an actor.
Each season does an excellent job of propelling the story forward and each Season finale felt like it would have been a fitting end of the show. But the show continued on for four seasons, each doing a great job of not stagnating, not repeating the same content and tropes. It subverted expectations and continued to hook you in.
The series finale aired tonight and was a fitting end to the show. Not the one I expected (at least not fully expected). The actors and actresses throughout the show have been phenomenal and tonight they continued to shine. Sally, Fuches, NoHo Hank, all did outstanding performances and for a show titled Barry, there was little of the actual character, but somehow it still felt right. Barry was able to avoid what too many American TV shows fall into: airing so long that they forget to tell a good story. While I do not think it is perfect (there were some shaky decisions made by characters in the final season), it definitely was a strong show throughout.
If you are looking for a show to watch, I cannot recommend Barry enough. 4 seasons, 32 episodes, usually about 30 minutes a piece means it isn't a terribly long show or hard to watch. And the acting, directing, and story are well worth it!
