Mistborn #2: The Well of Ascension
Mistborn was the series I started after reading Malazan's book of the fallen. I was looking for something of a palette cleanser that I could read more quickly and get through. Mistborn #1 proved to be that, but Mistborn #2 I got stuck on and had a large period of just not reading anything in general.
I finally was able to sit back down and read again and it definitely reads faster than Malazan! I will say that Mistborn #2, The Well of Ascension took me a little longer to get interested. Where Mistborn #1 had the heist and the crew and I immediately fell in love with, even with the repeat cast of characters the second book just took longer for me to get interested in it.
It did an excellent job of showing how sometimes the best person at one job (a heist or revolution) may not be the best person to lead a government after the fact. I enjoyed the struggle as the characters who had been so great at their task in the previous book struggled to learn the best way to handle their new positions.
The second half of the book definitely had me more interested and then ending was a definite plus.
Sanderson also does an excellent job writing action scenes in a way that is exciting and understandable. His magic systems are very intersting and well defined which is a nice change from the softer system in Malazan. I do not know that I prefer one to the other but it is nice to have a change of pace.
I plan on reading Mistborn #3 shortly and am looking forward to closing out this trilogy.
